Joanne Helman is a Canadian artist, originally born in London, England and living in Toronto, Ontario. Her visual vocabulary is given expression in still life. Her work is compositionally simple and direct, which serves to highlight her signature high realism and meticulous oil technique, applying multiple layers of paint with tiny brushes.
Her understanding of light and shadow, and use of negative space, emphasize the solitude of the figures and seems to make them almost anthropomorphic. Meanwhile her minimal choice in colour and figure keep it beautifully simple.
